Grinch Day on Wednesday...Hopefully!

The following letter was sent home last week.  I have only collected money from a fourth of the class.  If we do not collect enough funds for Wednesday then I will return the money to students.

December 12, 2016

In ELA class we have been using Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas as a mentor text.

In this unit, students will ask questions concerning the Grinch's motives, the author's craft, and the role that setting plays in the development of the plot. Students will build and practice their fluency skills which are essential to the reading process.

Students will also begin to evaluate and form literary arguments based on the text. This is a skill that we will start this year and will be carried on throughout most of their educational career. Students will use these critical literacy skills to begin writing persuasive essays arguing whether or not the Grinch is to blame for stealing Christmas.

Once we complete this unit, we would like to celebrate all of the learning that will have taken place over the next few weeks with a Grinch Day Extravaganza on December 21st. Students will participate in various activities that integrate math, science, literacy, and art. As a reward for all of their hard work, we will serve the students pizza in addition to their regular cafeteria lunch.  We are asking that each student send in 3 dollars to cover the costs of drinks, pizza, and paper products. Over the years, we as teachers have found this to be an easier, cheaper router than a traditional holiday party. Thank you in advance for your participation in this. Please send in the 3 dollars by Monday, December 19th so that we may plan appropriately.
