It is CRUNCH time!

End of Grade test are important.

Students are expected to do their best.

Ways you can help your student prepare:

·        Help review content and vocabulary

o    Math – Continue to quiz students on their multiplication and division facts.

Utilize online math practice and tutorials on Dreambox, Khan Academy, and Discovery Education

o    ELA –   In 5th grade students spend a lot of time identifying theme and citing evidence to support their ideas.  Discuss the message conveyed in movies, TV shows, and/or commercials and make sure that your student proves his/her thoughts with details.

o    Science -  Watch the weather with your students.  Watch Educational programs on TV or online.  Bill Nye the Science Guy was recently added to the streaming lists.  Anything narrated by David Attenborough is perfect for learning about Ecosystems and the interdependence of plants, animals, and their environment.  Programs like Planet Earth and Myth Busters can be accessed online through your student's Discovery Education log in and is available on Nexflix as well as many other similar programs.

·        Encourage Practice & Problem Solving

o    Math – Have your student help you with the real world problem solving that adults do every day like, meal planning and cooking.  Student need practice halving and doubling recipes, measuring out items, estimating food costs.  Have students calculate change received at the drive thru.  If you are planning for or taking any trips this summer have your student help you calculate costs for gas, hotels, and meals.

o    ELA – Read!  I know crazy, right!  Students are required to read for long periods of time with minimal breaks.  It is the marathon of tests.  Help your student build stamina by encouraging your student to sit, read, and then tell you about.  Provide quite time for reading daily.  Students may read novels, magazines, newspapers, on any topic that your student is interested in and can understand.  TURN THE CLOSED CAPTION ON!  Sneak reading into television watching by turning on the closed captions.  Challenge your student to find the errors in the text.  Utilize ReadTheory online.  This is a great program that tracks student growth.  Encourage students to read justifications for each answer choice when reviewing graded quizzes.

o    Science –  Like I said above, Watch Bill Nye and Anything narrated by David Attenborough, Myth Busters are all great ways to review science content.  Anybody remember Slim Good Body?  Well I do, and students can also watch that through their Discovery Education account.

·        Prepare your student for standardized testing days follow the 4Gs!

o    Get active!   Get good physical activity the day before and after testing.  This helps students fall asleep and the night before.

o    Go to bed early!

o    Gather your things!  Make sure that everything is ready the night before.  Have clean, comfortable dress code clothing ready to wear.  Students should dress in layers.  Have a dress code appropriate sweater or jacket to wear during testing.

o    Grub down!  Students need to eat a healthy breakfast.   While I need students to eat breakfast the morning of testing, eating too much before testing can backfire and cause a student to be drowsy or even sick.  If your student is unable to get breakfast at home our school provides breakfast each morning.

Great Videos for Science Content

I have been telling the students about some amazing videos that they can be watching at home to support the science that were are doing in class.
Students can log into their Discovery Education account and watch the Planet Earth videos.  This is a great nature series that highlights different ecosystems.  It is also on Netflix.  If you have internet or Netflix streaming access at home these would be great things to watch and discuss with your students.  While watching you can ask your students to identify producers, consumers, and decomposers as well as herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores.  Below I have listed some other Essential Questions that you can discuss with your students

How does this ecosystem support a variety of organisms?

Compare different ecosystems.

How do humans affect these  ecosystems?

How are materials recycled in nature?

How do light, temperature and soil composition affect an ecosystem's capacity to support life?

How do organisms interact and rely on each other within an ecosystem?

No reading Logs this week

I did not pass out and assign reading logs this week but I still want students reading :).

Ask your student about their fish, snails, isopods and crickets.  Ask if they are male, female, and how old they think they might be.

Spring Break Blues and Other Info

I hope you are enjoying this break as much as I am.  I wanted to share some things that have reminded me of your students and school.

I have had some time to catch up on listening to some podcasts and thought parents and students could both enjoy this one:

http://www.startalkradio.net/show/mythbusters-part-1/

http://www.startalkradio.net/show/mythbusters-part-2/

I really connected with the parts where they discuss the science in everyday life and failures as valuable learning experiences.  My thoughts were that some of you may have a long car ride in the next few days and this would be a great way to fill it.

I have also enjoyed watching a few different things on Netflix that connect with things we are learning in school.

Brain Games, Cosmos, Ultimate Guide to the Presidents, Men Who Built America.  Remember to turn on closed captioning whenever you can to sneak some text (and reading) into their screen time.

Below is some information about a summer program in the Raleigh area that I think sound great.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is still accepting applications for Boys in Science and Girls in Science summer camps!

These week-long overnight camps are for middle-school students who love science and nature. Boys in Science Piedmont Ed-Venture, for rising 7th and 8th grade boys, is scheduled for June 22-26. Girls in Science Piedmont Ed-Venture is for rising 6th and 7th grade girls and will take place July 6-11. Both camps are based at Blue Jay Point County Park, with an overnight camping trip to Hanging Rock State Park. Applications for this selective program are due April 13, so get your application in! For more information and to apply, please visit our website.
